🔷 Granny Square Pattern

Round 1:

Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then make 15 dc into the loop.
Sl st to the top of the first dc and fasten off. (16 sts)
💡 Tip: Weave in your ends as you go to save time later!

Round 2 – Puff Stitches:
Attach your second color and ch 2.
To make a puff stitch:
Yarn over, insert hook in the same st, pull up a loop to dc height (3 loops on hook). Repeat this 2 more times for a total of 7 loops. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops, then ch 1 to lock the stitch.
Repeat in each stitch around – 16 puff stitches total.
Sl st to the top of ch 2 and fasten off.

Round 3 – Cluster Stitches:
Attach your third color between two puff stitches.
Ch 3.
To make a cluster stitch:

Repeat all around (16 clusters). Sl st and fasten off.

Round 4 – Turn into a Square:

👜 Ready to Make the Bag?

Let’s add two more rounds in traditional granny square style:

Rounds 5 – 6:
Ch 3, 2 dc in the same space, ch 1.
In each space: 3 dc, ch 1. In corners: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1.
Repeat around. Sl st at the end of each round.
After Round 6, sl st and fasten off.

🔁 Repeat all steps above to make your second square!

🪡 Assembling the Bag

  • Place the two granny squares right sides together (wrong sides facing out).

  • Attach yarn in a corner and ch 1.

  • Use sc stitches to join three sides together (2 sides and the bottom).

  • In each corner, add just 1 sc.

  • Sl st to finish and don’t fasten off yet.

Now flip your bag inside out – your right sides should now be on the outside!

🎒 Crochet the Strap

From your last sl st:

  • Ch as many as you want (approx. 150 for a long crossbody style).

  • Sl st to the opposite top corner of the bag.

  • Then, sc back along the entire chain to strengthen it.

  • Sl st again to secure and fasten off.

🎀 Make the Drawstring

  • Cut 6 strands of yarn, about 30–40 inches each (length may vary based on your bag size).

  • Tie them together and braid using 2 strands per section for a fuller look.

  • Knot the end to secure.

  • Weave the braid through the holes of your granny cluster round, threading all around the bag’s top edge.

  • Tie in a bow at the front – and that’s it!

🎉 Your Drawstring Bag is Ready!

This bag is perfect for summer festivals, casual outings, or simply showcasing your love for crochet. The classic granny square design keeps things nostalgic while the colorful yarn choices let your creativity shine.
