Hexagon Jester Hat Crochet Pattern

If you love playful crochet projects that instantly turn heads, the Hexagon Jester Hat is pure joy on a hook. This design blends the classic granny-style hexagon with a whimsical jester silhouette, making it perfect for festivals, costumes, themed parties, or just adding a little fun to your handmade wardrobe. The hat is surprisingly simple in construction and offers plenty of room for creativity with colors and embellishments.

Beyond its playful look, the Hexagon Jester Hat is a wonderful project for crocheters who enjoy experimenting with structure and texture. The solid hexagon construction creates a firm base, while the folded shaping and textured brim add dimension and comfort. Whether you choose soft romantic tones like pink and gold or bold contrasting colors, this hat becomes a true handmade statement piece that celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, and the joy of crocheting something completely unique.

The main body of the hat is worked as a solid hexagon no chain spaces giving it a sturdy, structured look. Once folded and shaped, the sides and brim transform that flat piece into a dramatic jester-style hat with pointed tips. Finish it off with poms, bells, or stars, and you’ve got a statement piece that’s as fun to make as it is to wear.

Stitches & Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • dc = double crochet

  • hdc = half double crochet

  • sc = single crochet

  • sl st = slip stitch

  • ch = chain

  • inc = increase

Instructions – Main Body

Note:
This is essentially a granny square hexagon, crocheted to 11 rows with no chain spaces.

Row 1

Make a magic ring (mr), ch 2. In the mr, crochet 18 dc. Sl st to join into the first dc.

Row 2

Sl st into the top of the next two dc, ch 3, 5 dc into the same stitch, skip 3 dc, then 6 dc in between every 3 dc space.
You should now have 6 sets of 6 dc corners, forming a hexagon. This is the increase (inc) for the row.
Sl st to join into the first dc, then sl st into the next two dc so you are positioned above the middle of the 6 dc.

Row 3

Ch 3, 5 dc into the same space. Work 3 dc in between each set of 6 dc clusters.
(Each corner still has 6 dc, with 3 dc in the spaces between corners.)

Rows 4–11

Repeat Row 3:

  • Increase in each corner with 6 dc

  • Work 3 dc in each space between the clusters below

By Row 11, you should have 9 clusters of 3 dc in each space.
Tie off.

Instructions – Sides and Brim

Shape the Jester Form
Fold the hexagon so it resembles a jester shape (refer to your photo). Join yarn at one tip.
Sc through both sets of stitches along one side until you reach the bottom near the brim.
Tie off and leave a tail for weaving.

Second Side + Brim Setup
Join yarn on the second side. Sc along the side until you reach the brim opening.
Do not tie off. Instead, hdc around the entire brim opening, using your chosen color(s).
Sl st to join at the end of the round (this should land at the side seam).

Brim Round 1
Ch 2, dc in each hdc around the brim. Sl st to join.

Brim Texture Rounds
Ch 3, bpdc (back post double crochet) in each dc around.
Sl st to join.
Repeat this round 4–8 times (8 rows work great if you like folding the brim like a beanie).

Final Brim Round
Ch 2, hdc around the last row. Tie off.

Finishing Touches
Attach poms, stars, or bells to the tips of the hat.
Weave in all ends securely.

Enjoy!
Your Hexagon Jester Hat is complete—bold, fun, and totally unique.
