Easy Ice Cream Crochet Stitch

The Ice Cream Crochet Stitch is a beautiful three-dimensional pattern that creates a playful texture, perfect for baby blankets, garments, and decorative projects. Inspired by a handmade blanket seen on social media, this stitch combines double crochet clusters and popcorn stitches to form adorable “ice cream cones” across the fabric.

This pattern works up surprisingly fast and looks stunning in multiple color combinations. You can keep it classic or let your creativity shine by changing colors in every row.

Easy Ice Cream Crochet Stitch

Materials

  • Worsted or baby-weight yarn in 3 colors:

    • Main color (background)

    • Ice cream scoop color

    • Cone color

  • Crochet hook 2.0 mm – 2.5 mm (adjust to avoid gaps)

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

Stitch Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain

  • dc – double crochet

  • popcorn – popcorn stitch (5 dc in same stitch, closed together)

  • yo – yarn over

  • st – stitch

Level: This is a more advanced pattern, as I assume you know how to change color within a row and also how to carry the yarn along the row.

Stitches:

L = Chain, DEC = 2 double crochet together (Yo on hook and insert hook into first stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. Do not complete this double crochet, but continue to the next stitch.

Yo on hook, insert hook into next stitch and pull through stitch. Then yarn over again and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook)

P = Popcorn stitch: Make 5 double crochet stitches in the same stitch. Remove hook from loop and count backward from the 5th double crochet stitch to the 1st double crochet stitch. Working on the right side of your work: Insert the front (right side) needle to the back into the first double crochet stitch. Then, insert the needle into the loop and pull the loop through the stitch that is on the needle.

If you are working on the wrong side of your work: Insert the back (right side) needle to the front into the first double crochet stitch. Then, insert the needle into the loop and pull the loop through the stitch that is on the needle.

ST = Double crochet (1ST = 1ST in the next stitch, 2ST = 1ST in the next 2 stitches, 3ST = 1ST in the next 3 stitches, etc.)

Ice cream stitch:

Make 23 chain stitches with light green; This makes 2 ice creams (2 x 10 stitches plus 1 = 21 chain stitches plus 2 chain stitches for round 1):

Round 1 (RL): Start in the 3rd chain from the hook and make 1 double crochet in each chain until the end, turn (= 21 double crochet stitches)

Round 2: In this round, we will start with the cone, so we will also use the light brown yarn: 2 chain stitches. (Does not count as a stitch), 5 dc, *change to light brown: 1 dc, change to light green:* 9 dc, repeat from * to * once more, 5 dc, turn (= 21 dc)

3rd round: 2 ch, 3 dc, *dec, change to light brown: 3 dc in 1 dc, change to light green: dec*, 5 dc, repeat from * to * once more, 3 dc, turn

In the images above: Make 2 double crochet stitches together; remember to use the brown yarn to pull it through the 3 loops when making this color change.

Row 4: 2 ch, 2 dc, *decrease, change to light brown: 2 dc in 1 dc, 1 dc in 1 dc, 2 dc in 1 dc, change to light green: decrease*, 3 dc, repeat from * to * once more, 2 dc, turn. We no longer need the light brown yarn, so we can cut it; for Row 5, we need the ice cream color (white).

Round 5: 2 ch, 4 dc, *change color to white: dc in 1 dc, 1 dc in 1 dc, dc in 1 dc, change color to light green:*, 7 dc, repeat from * to * once more, 4 dc, turn.

Round 6: 2 ch, 5 dc, *change to white: sc in the 1st stitch, change to light green:*, 9 dc, repeat from *-* one more time, 5 dc, turn

Round 7: 2 ch, 1 sc in the 1st stitch, turn (= 21 sc)

Repeat steps 2 to 7 until you reach the correct height.
