Cat Stitch Blanket Pattern

The Cat Stitch Blanket is one of the most adorable crochet patterns you can make, especially if you love playful textures and creative designs. This charming blanket features a repeating pattern that gradually forms tiny cat silhouettes across the fabric. At first glance the stitch pattern looks like a beautiful textured shell design, but as the rows build, the little cats begin to appear creating a delightful surprise in your crochet work.

This blanket is perfect for baby blankets, children’s throws, or cozy decorative pieces for cat lovers. By changing colors every few rows, the cats stand out clearly against the background, giving the blanket a whimsical and artistic appearance. Even though the finished project looks intricate, the pattern itself uses simple stitches such as double crochet, chains, and clusters, making it accessible to adventurous beginners and enjoyable for experienced crocheters.

One of the most fun aspects of this pattern is watching the cats slowly emerge as you crochet. After a few repeats of the pattern, the shapes become visible and the blanket comes to life. You can experiment with different color palettes to create playful kittens, elegant monochrome cats, or even rainbow cat rows.

Abbreviations (US Crochet Terms)

  • CH – Chain

  • DC – Double Crochet

  • Cluster – Yarn over, insert hook into the space between shells two rows below, yarn over and pull up a loop to the working row. Repeat this three times so you have 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first 6 loops, yarn over again and pull through the final 2 loops.

Starting Chain

Chain 103 stitches to begin.

Adjusting the Blanket Size

This stitch pattern is built on a 5-stitch repeat.

To calculate a custom width:

  • 8 chains for the beginning

  • Multiples of 5 chains for the pattern repeat

  • 5 chains to finish the row

Example:

103 chains =
8 (beginning) + 90 (18 repeats of 5 stitches) + 5 (ending)

Foundation Section (First 2 Rows)

Row 1

  1. DC in the 4th chain from the hook.

  2. DC in the next two stitches (3 DC total).

  3. Skip 2 stitches.

Repeat the following pattern:

Work a shell in the next stitch
Shell = 2 DC, ch 1, 2 DC

Skip 3 stitches.

Repeat from * across the row until 5 stitches remain.

Skip 2 stitches, then work 1 DC in each of the last 3 stitches.

Turn your work.

Row 2

Chain 3 (counts as first DC).

DC in the next two stitches.

In the chain space of the shell from the previous row, work:

Shell = 2 DC, ch 1, 2 DC

Continue working a shell in the chain space of each shell across the row.

Finish with 1 DC in each of the last three stitches.

Continue the Cat Pattern

Change to a new color and repeat:

Rows 3, 4, and 5

Each set of three rows creates another row of cats.

Continue repeating these rows until the blanket reaches your desired length.

Example size:

Foundation + 21 rows of cats + finishing rows
Produces a blanket approximately 66 cm x 82 cm

Finishing Rows

Second-to-Last Row

Repeat Row 3.

Final Row

  1. Chain 3, DC in the next two stitches.

To create a smoother top edge, work the following sequence:

  • TR (treble crochet) in the cluster stitch below

  • DC

  • HDC

  • SC in the next three stitches

  • HDC

  • DC

  • TR in the next cluster stitch

Repeat this pattern across the row to create a balanced edge.

Finish with 1 DC in each of the last three stitches.

Blanket Edging

To complete the blanket:

  1. Chain 3.

  2. Work DC stitches evenly around the entire edge of the blanket.

For easier stitching along the sides and foundation edge, it helps to use a slightly smaller crochet hook.

Corners

In each corner work:

2 DC, ch 1, 2 DC in the same stitch.

This creates a clean and structured corner.
